Chinese Intelligence Fronts Using LinkedIn to Recruit Spies

The U.S. counter-intelligence chief William Evanina has alleged that American-based company LinkedIn is currently at the center of a Chinese spy recruiting effort aimed at thousands of individuals holding positions that may grant access to government and commercial trade secrets.

Paul Rockwell, the head of Trust and Safety at LinkedIn has confirmed to Reuter’s that the company has been involved in discussions with law enforcement agencies about the Chinese recruiting efforts which utilize thousands of fake accounts to contact potential spies.

This news comes after an ex-CIA officer, Kevin Mallory, has been charged with espionage on behalf of a foreign entity. Mallory was contacted by a ‘Richard Yang’ through LinkedIn’s messaging system in 2017 and thereafter is alleged to have agreed to selling US secrets to the Chinese. If convicted, Mallory could be sentenced to life in prison.
